Cats that go outside are at a higher risk for disease and injury.  We recommend that all cats be kept indoors at all times to protect them against the elements .  Cats that go outside are prone to fight injuries, upper respiratory tract infections, and even death through car accidents and animal attacks.  If, however, your cat does go outside we recommend taking a few precautions.

1) All cats should wear only break-away collars.  Cats leap and jump inside and outside and can get hung up on just about anything.

2) All cats should be vaccinated annually .  Due to increased exposure to all different types of diseases all outdoor cats should be vaccinated annually for the feline leukemia virus, rabies ,and distemper.

3) All cats should be tested annually for Feline Leukemia.   Because of increased risk to exposure all cats that go outside should be tested annually for the feline leukemia virus.  This fatal disease is very easily passed from cat to cat, vaccination is one form of prevention but  not vaccine provides 100% protections from the disease.  Some cats carry the virus for years before becoming ill.

4) All cats should be on heartworm and flea and tick prevention.  Cats that are outside come into contact with many species of animals that carry parasites.  Cats should be given Interceptor tablets year-round to protect against heartworm disease and intestinal parasites.  Cats should also have Frontline Plus ® applied once monthly March through November to defend against fleas and ticks.
