As your pet ages many of his or her requirements for health care will change.  It is important to stay informed about all of the possible aging changes that may occur in your pet.  There may be changes in their internal organs which are undetectable in an examination and only found in blood tests.  Arthritic or boney changes may cause your pet to limp or just move slower.  As pets age, they may need to have a change in diet to something more appropriate for a “senior.”

Organ profile, Complete Blood Count, Thyroid Screen, and Urinalysis

Screening major organs can help to rule out common medical diseases such as diabetes mellitus, renal failure, thyroid issues, and liver disease, or can simply catch them early on in the disease process.  Catching a disease early can help your pet thrive longer and have a better quality of life.

Arthritic/Boney Changes

An exam may not indicate all that is going on in your pets life.  A detailed history will be very helpful.  If your pet is have trouble getting up or jumping up like her or she used too, nutritional supplements or even medications may be needed to help keep your pet comfortable.  We would love to talk about this at length at your pet’s next exam.

Dietary changes for seniors

As your pet ages his nutritional requirements change as well.  Some cats, for example, need to be on a lower protein, lower phosphorus diet to maintain healthy kidneys.  We will discuss possible dietary changes with you during your pet’s next exam.

Always remember that any food change should be done slowly, by mixing in the old diet with the new diet for at least 1 week.
