A word from Cliff Lake Veterinary Clinic...
It’s hard to believe, but ticks and other troublesome parasites may emerge as early as the end of March. Whether it’s Ticks and Fleas, or Lyme Disease, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, or Heartworm Disease, it is important to protect our furry friends!
This notice is a friendly reminder to pick up Frontline Plus, Heartgard Plus, and, to make sure you are current on your Lyme Vaccination. We have competitive prices and are happy to sell the doses individually vs. having to purchase an entire pack at once.
If you have any questions about Flea, Tick, or Heartworm prevention, Lyme Disease Vaccination, or any other services, please feel free to call us or stop in at any time to talk with a Certified Veterinary Technician. We look forward to working with your family!

What you need to know about Ticks & Fleas…
Ticks can carry a variety of potentially deadly diseases, such as Lyme Disease, Anaplasma, & Ehrlichia. Of these, there is only a vaccination for Lyme disease. Because there are not yet vaccines for all tick borne diseases, it is very important for your dog or cat to be protected by a topical anti-parasitic, like Frontline Plus. Ticks are found not just in the county, but also in suburban & urban settings. We offer Tick-Borne Disease Screening with our canine annual Heartworm Test, ask us for details.
Fleas…itching…scratching…those pesky little buggers! Often it is hard to find the actual fleas on dog and cats, they are small and difficult to see. You may see adult fleas, or only “flea dirt” (flea feces). Fleas lay eggs that lie dormant in bedding, carpet, and rugs, developing later into pupae and larvae, and starting the cycle again as biting adults. Adult fleas and larvae are relatively easy to kill with topical Frontline Plus. Fleas can carry tapeworms, so be on the lookout for tapeworm segments in the stool, which look like flat grains of rice.

What you need to know about Prevention…
Based on results compiled from our in-house lab in 2010, as many as 8% of dogs are testing positive for increasingly common Tick Borne diseases such as Lyme Disease, Anaplasma, or Ehrlichia.
The outdated mentality of “only hunting dogs get Lyme Disease” is no longer true, as even Bichons, Yorkies, & Bulldogs are testing positive. Easy to apply, water resistant, and effective, Frontline Plus should be applied by the end of March to provide protection for the April warm up.
Lyme Disease is an increasing threat in Minnesota, as ticks are turning up with greater frequency. We recommend the Lyme Vaccine to protect most dogs. Ask us about getting started.
And, don’t forget Heartworm Disease & Intestinal Parasites. Heartworms are transmitted via mosquitoes and are detected with an annual Blood Test. Intestinal Parasites, which can be transmitted to humans, are shed in the stool and are detected in a Fecal Sample. If tests are negative, Heartgard Plus should be given monthly, the year round, for the most complete protection from both of these infections. |
